Telepath™

Telepath™ can locate leaks in Subsea Umbilicals through a combination of analytical and numerical modelling, backed up by expert analysis from Brinker Technology. Telepath™ can be used:

As part of a contingency approach with a new umbilical system OR
As an emergency response tool in the event of a leak.
The 4 Stages of Telepath™

There are up to 4 stages in a Telepath™ operation. The earlier the level of entry the better the accuracy of the resulting location estimate and the shorter the response time.

Pre Installation Activities

Provide a foundation for any future leak location exercise either immediately following installation or later in the operating life of the line. The recommended testing includes:

A range of pressure fall-off tests to enable performance benchmarks to be set for the line. Establishment of key fluid and pipeline properties

Pre installation testing enables the numerical models to be properly calibrated for the system in question – helping to ensure the accuracy of the resulting leak location estimate.

Note: It is likely that the necessary testing will be only a small extension of standard pre-installation work carried out by the operator/umbilical manufacturer (such as Factory Acceptance Tests).
Post Installation/Leak Testing

This will allow a greater understanding of the performance of the line to be gained in-situ.

In addition to pre installation testing, or indeed if pre installation testing has not been possible, signature analysis testing of the line in-situ will help to further improve the accuracy of any leak location estimate.

In-situ pressure and flow testing will ensure that post installation conditions, such as temperature and topographical effects are accounted for. By familiarising themselves with the system infrastructure, Brinker Technology will be well placed to respond quickly in the event of a leak.
Leak Location

Telepath™ been shown to operate up to an accuracy of less than 1% of the total line length. As the leak’s location can be found both quickly and accurately, there can be a significant reduction of the necessary system downtime as well as assisting DSV operations to keep repair costs to a minimum.
Defect Analysis

Using expert knowledge and experience of leakage, Brinker have developed tools to predict the likelihood of certain types of defects from information gained during the Telepath™ process.
